“Caregiving is a profound act of love that often happens without recognition. Behind closed doors, caregivers generously give their time, energy, and compassion to support loved ones. The National Caregiving Collaborative was established to bring this essential role into the spotlight—raising awareness, offering resources, and nurturing a culture of care. From coast to coast, this initiative is empowering caregivers across Canada by providing education, fostering community engagement, and connecting them with others who understand their journey.”
Canadian Caregiver Support Line Guidelines
The Canadian Caregiver Support Line Guidelines are a resource created to guide the development, enhancement, and expansion of caregiver support lines across Canada. This endeavour was developed through the Canadian Caregiver Collaborative, a partnership of caregiving organizations working together on initiatives that provide shared benefits to caregivers nationwide. Partner organizations include Family Caregivers of British Columbia, Caregivers Alberta, Ontario Caregiver Organization, Caregivers New Brunswick, Caregivers Nova Scotia, and the Young Caregivers Association.
With funding from the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation, the Collaborative reviewed current practices across multiple caregiver support lines in Canada and gathered insights from other non-profit organizations. The Guidelines were further shaped by focus groups with young caregivers, whose lived experiences informed recommendations on accessibility, navigation, and meaningful support. Together, these perspectives provide a practical, evidence-based foundation for developing responsive, caregiver-centred support line services.
